The
project involves 1600SF of a dilapidated interior shophouse
located in Georgetown, Penang. There was no formal design brief that restricted
the unusual approach of embarking on an organic design process. Therefore the
process offered abundance of opportunities for design and even so during
construction, empowering creativity at any time. This unstructured design
process has the ability to bring out the best inherent qualities of a place,
allowing design to speak for itself.
Space planning carved out a front retail lounge area and an existing courtyard connected by a circulation artery punctuated by a wall of completed projects. Separated from the retail lounge by a door, the open air courtyard is designed with an operable sliding roof allowing ample air circulation and natural light into the interior space. An elevated Cambodian walnut timber platform provides a small cozy meeting room overlooking the interior courtyard, creating interplay of inside and outside space.
